If you have any comments to make regarding this piece, we would love hearing
from you. We think the piece has potential to be adapted for many special
occasions and uses (including weddings). Really, though, the words are appropriate
24/7 as the expression goes. The piece may appear slightly fuzzy on your
monitor, but it will print out very sharp on your printer. It's five pages
long. Enjoy!
Flight Plan: Kitty Hawk
Ron Harris has
written a seven and a half minute work for choir and piano called, "Flight
Plan: Kitty Hawk". It was written to commemorate the Centennial of
Flight being celebrated this year (and especially this autumn), 100 years
after the Wright Brothers' first successful powered flight in North Carolina.
The piece is being performed on three special occasions this fall by The
United States Air Force Academy Cadet Chorale. One of those occasions is
the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of The Academy.
It is based on three texts:
COURAGE, by Amelia Earhart
HIGH FLIGHT, by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
THE AIR FORCE HYMN (first verse only, revised)
The latter two texts are clearly spiritual in nature and related to flying. The Earhart text, though secular, is often cited in sermons and addresses issues of the soul. All of which to say that this piece is suitable for both secular choirs or choirs associated with churches or church related colleges and high schools.
The piece is both inspiring and fun to sing. Not virtuosic, but not without the need of serious rehearsal. The first section is for tenor soloist backed by an ethereal women's choir sound and piano accompaniment. The following two sections are for full choir and piano with no additional solos.
The piece is not being put into print at this time, but for any choirs interested in performing it, we will be glad to work out a very modest fee in return for our providing permission to photocopy the piece. Please contact us by Email if you'd like to see a review copy.
